Mullahy lehrte wie Fromm an der Columbia University und am William Alanson White Institute in New York und war einer der Ersten, der Fromms Denken systematisch zu erfassen suchte. Vor allem teilte er die Kritik Fromms an der Freudschen Theorie vom Ödipuskomplex, die Fromm in diesem Beitrag zum ersten Mal vom Mythos selbst her begründet.
